J. R. R. Tolkien has been established as one of the inspirations behind Knightmare, and thus the Great Ocean may be a reference to the Great Sea (Belegaer) of Tolkien's Middle Earth, which must be sailed across on one-way trips to the Undying Lands - trips which, with just a few exceptions, only elf folk are allowed to make.
